In 2017 Dr Alison Neal invited artists and writers to respond to the changes happening due to roadworks in the Clydach Gorge.
I wanted to hear stories from people living in the Clydach Gorge, the site of ambitious and landscape shaping roadworks. I asked a local gardening group to grow little gem lettuces (they are mentioned in a locally written book, Border Country by Raymond Williams) and so when they were ready I went to Clydach village and knocked on doors to exchange a gem for a story. If there was no answer I would leave the plant and a note. I received responses both in person and via email, one of which was a digital copy of a handwritten account by a Dennis Dando of his childhood in the village.
